Bank loans are often essential to starting a business. However, the related meetings with banks can pose a number of hurdles for founders. To secure a positive decision on a financing application, you should make a strong impression with your business plan at the initial meeting. We spoke with Michael Kruse, business client adviser at Volksbank im Harz eG in Osterode, and Janusch Zydek, Head of Business Clients at Sparkasse Hildesheim Goslar Peine at Rammelsberg-Haus in Goslar, about how best to do this, what really matters and what founders need to bear in mind.<\/p>\n

What happens at a bank meeting?<\/h3>\n

In general, there is not just one meeting with the bank. Several appointments are often needed to establish a long-term business relationship and find the best financing option. The initial meeting begins with both sides introducing themselves to get a first impression of each other. Both business client advisers expect founders to then explain their business concept again in their own words, on their own initiative. Michael Kruse says: \u201cThat\u2019s how I can tell how much of the work on the business plan is actually their own.\u201d The advisers ask targeted follow-up questions about the concept, which founders should be able to answer confidently. According to Janusch Zydek, typical questions include: What makes the business model special, and what qualities do the founders have to put it into practice? How did they arrive at the projected revenue figures, and how can they achieve them? If some questions remain unanswered at the end of the meeting, that does not mean the founders are out of the running. They can provide detailed answers at the next appointment.<\/p>\n

What matters in a bank meeting?<\/h3>\n

Both business client advisers agree that authenticity is important. That means opting for a smart appearance rather than dressing up, and being able to speak convincingly about your own concept. \u201cWhen we get to the figures in a meeting, I often find that founders seem a little unsure. They say, \u2018I don\u2019t know exactly; my tax adviser prepared that.\u2019 You can avoid this. It\u2019s better to bring your tax adviser or startup adviser to the meeting,\u201d says Janusch Zydek. The business plan does not have to be completely flawless in every respect. What matters more is convincing the bank of the founder\u2019s qualities and the concept. If some parts of the business plan lack plausibility or questions remain, adjustments can still be made afterwards. Michael Kruse also points to other factors that can influence the first impression: \u201cTo make a positive first impression, clients should arrive on time. If they bring a tax adviser or startup adviser, it is best to announce this beforehand. Founders should also be attentive and focused during the meeting. But the conversation does not have to be stiff; it is perfectly fine to laugh together.\u201d<\/p>\n

How much equity is really expected?<\/h3>\n

According to both business client advisers, there are no fixed benchmarks for the amount of equity to contribute. Factors such as the scale of the capital requirement and the risk\/reward ratio of the startup are taken into account, but ultimately every case must be assessed individually. If the business concept and the person behind it are thoroughly convincing, financing may sometimes be approved even when very little or no equity is available. There are also funding programmes that can increase the equity contribution, and founders are always advised to explore these in cooperation with their startup adviser. In principle, however, banks do expect founders to contribute equity. This demonstrates that founders are also prepared to share in the risks associated with starting a business.<\/p>\n

So how can you best prepare for your first meeting with a bank?<\/h3>\n

Both business client advisers agree that good preparation means not only knowing your business concept well, but also involving the business development agency and other qualified advisers in the planning at an early stage. Founders can also think about possible financing options in advance. As for the business plan, grammatical errors and confusing structure should be avoided, since they can undermine the first impression.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
