Start young: entrepreneurship in the classroom

At some schools in the Goslar district, the essentials of starting a business are already taught in class.

Entrepreneurship – the enthusiasm for starting, developing and running a company – can be introduced to young people early. Working for yourself can also be an attractive career option.

At BBS 1 in Goslar – Am Stadtgarten, ‘starting a company’ and ‘business strategy’ are part of the curriculum. They are just one part of business-oriented teaching in the business-focused technical college, vocational high school and business administration college programs. Nina Fahrtmann, Head of Department II for the vocational high school and business administration college, emphasizes its importance: ‘We want to show our students every possible prospect for their working future. Self-employment is one of them.’

To put theory into practice, teachers support participation in the Wolfsburg AG’s ‘promotionschool’ competition or the ‘SEE – Students Experience Entrepreneurship’ workshop run by the Entrepreneurship Center at PFH Private University of Applied Sciences Göttingen. ‘For us, that’s the best way to simulate real practice,’ says Fahrtmann, underscoring her school’s commitment. ‘The students also receive valuable external feedback on their pitches and ideas.’

In ‘promotionschool,’ students develop business models over an extended period. They broaden their business knowledge, build on individual strengths and gain initial insights into entrepreneurial thinking and action. ‘SEE’ is a compact workshop lasting several days. Participants gain practical knowledge and exciting insights into the world of starting a business. They, too, develop and present business ideas.

‘To develop a dynamic economic region, we need young people who can be inspired by innovation and entrepreneurship,’ emphasizes Dr. Jörg Aßmann, Managing Director of WiReGo. ‘As an economic development agency, we very much welcome the commitment of schools and other educational institutions.’
