‘I started working for myself as a master bicycle mechanic. Now I’ve received an unsolicited confirmation of membership from the chamber of skilled trades. Do I have to be a member?’ Marie asks. Unfortunately, yes: anyone who becomes self-employed must comply with a range of registration formalities and legal requirements.
When a business is registered, the following bodies are generally informed automatically: the chamber of skilled trades for craft occupations, the statutory accident insurance association, the chamber of industry and commerce, the state statistical office and the commercial register (local court). Self-employed people in the liberal professions (such as doctors, architects, tax advisors and artists) register directly with the tax office, not the trade office. Both commercial and freelance founders must submit the completed ‘Tax Registration Questionnaire’ electronically to their tax office within one month of opening the business or starting their activity.
Our tip: Call the number given in the letter and ask whether founders can have a period without membership fees.
