Starting a self-employed business as a home helper

Justyna Gagelmann from Goslar is an energetic, lively woman. In spring 2020, she took the step into self-employment with her company “Haushaltshilfe & Betreuung”. She wants to make life easier for older people and bring joy to their everyday lives. Together with her team, she is dedicated to the well-being of others—something that is more important and in greater demand than ever, especially today.

A startup facing obstacles

During the startup phase, Justyna Gagelmann received support from WiReGo. The modules for aspiring founders and personal advice on her business plan strengthened her resolve. But the trained home economics professional had imagined the launch of her business differently. “I received my licence on 1 March 2020, and then came COVID,” she says. Care depends on personal contact, home visits and social services provided directly on site. In addition to the usual scepticism many older people feel towards people they do not yet know, fear of an unfamiliar illness now made her fresh start even more difficult. “But I overcame it,” Gagelmann says proudly. “With care, consideration and perseverance, I was able to build my business successfully even during the pandemic.” Her empathetic, straightforward manner also helps her bring people together and overcome challenges successfully.

The team at Haushaltshilfe & Betreuung Justyna Gagelmann is dedicated to caring for older people and those in need of assistance. Its services include both household support—such as cleaning, laundry and meal preparation—and care services, such as walks, accompaniment to medical appointments and support for people with dementia in their own homes.

Looking ahead

Although the launch brought its share of challenges, Justyna Gagelmann would not change a thing. Her desire to become self-employed came from the heart. She has since successfully completed her master craftsperson qualification in home economics. “Now I can expand my range of services and even train employees myself,” says Gagelmann. Her startup story is an inspiring one.
