SELF-EMPLOYED PART-TIME
Succeeding with a part-time business
For many people, becoming self-employed seems to involve changes that are (too) big. But you can certainly start small with a business idea alongside your main occupation. By starting a part-time business or a microenterprise, you can combine education, work or family life with your entrepreneurial passion.

Self-employed on the side
Starting a business as a side occupation has several advantages.
The entrepreneurial risk is usually low, you remain covered through your main job, and part-time self-employment gives you enough freedom for your family and friends. But important legal aspects must also be considered when starting a side business. If you are also employed, you must inform your employer before starting your business. An open conversation and transparency foster trust and a good relationship in the future too.
Things to know about starting a business on the side:
- Register a side business or microenterprise with the trade office or tax office (for freelancers)
- Inform your employer and, if necessary, ask for consent
- Inform your health insurer about possible adjustments to contributions
- Membership of the IHK or HWK is automatic – budget for the costs
- Rule out false self-employment
